The first Big 3 League draft happened Sunday night. The league will start to play out of Brooklyn this June. Now that the rosters are set I think we should give them a solid breakdown or at least run through some likes and dislikes.
Best Team Captain: Allen Iverson on every level and it’s not close. The reason I say it’s not close is because regardless of which angle you judge this category on, Iverson wins. Best player right now, Iverson. Best career, Iverson. Biggest personality, Iverson. Most marketability, Iverson.
Best Coach: Well I would say Iverson here too, but great players usually don’t translate into great coaches. That’s simply what history has taught us. It’s always the good locker room and fundamentally sound guys who end up being the best coaches. Based on that notion, I’m going with Brian Scalabrine. Veal was always a student of the game and the red head at times was know for his fire red shooting to match his hair.
Best Co-Captain: This is a tough one. I want to say Stephen Jackson because I think he’s the best combination of most talented at his best and closest to playing shape. Al Harrington is similar but still, give me the nod to Jackson on the court. Childress is younger but not near the talent level of Jackson. this is all a moot point though, because Jason Williams, White Chocolate himself still got it. Even if he has 50% of his handles then that’s way better than the 20% (at best) defensive ability (or motivation) the rest of these guys have.
Best Player Coach: There’s only Iverson and Oakley to choose from here. Though Iverson would most likely win in a game of one on one, I’m gonna have to run with Oakley on this one. Mainly because I think there’s at least a 20% chance Oakley knocks someone out like they’re Madison Square Garden security. That level of intimidation from both your starting center and the man with the clipboard simply cannot be matched by Iverson.
Best Overall Team: Well as much as I want it to be Iverson’s team, it isn’t. No team with fucking Mike Sweetney can be the best at anything. Unless that anything requires eating cheeseburgers while getting no rebounds. When I need a roster for that league, I’ll have Mike Sweetney on speed dial. Same goes for the team with Kwame Brown on it.
This is between the Killer 3’s and Trilogy. Their top two players are both similar quality players all around the same age. Trilogy has two talented wing players in James White and Rashad McCants. Flight White can jump through the roof. That athleticism could be super valuable.
The Killer Bee’s have probably the most talented wing player between the two with Larry Hughes, but he’s also the oldest. Reggie Evans is a difference maker here for me. He’s a bruiser and a rebound machine. In a 3v3 game possession is everything. On the smaller court fighting for rebounds is essential. Due to Evans and a true all star caliber point guard only a couple of years removed from playing in Chauncy Billups, I give Killer B’s the nod.
