There has been a lot of debate over the whole season about who should win MVP of this NBA season. The candidates are James Harden, Russell Westbrook, Lebron James, and Kawhi Leonard. Everyone knows what Westbrook is doing. He recently just clinched averaging a triple double for the whole season. Also yesterday he got his 42nd triple-double of the season, surpassing Oscar’s record. Both of these things only happened once and that’s when Oscar Robertson did it in the 1961-1962 season. James Harden has almost been averaging triple double the whole season himself. There are two things people should know about Harden’s season that people don’t know. This is Harden’s first season as a point guard and he led the Rockets to the third-best record in the Western Conference which no one excepted.
Kawhi Leonard has emerged as the new leader for the Spurs. He has done everything for them. He locks down the opposing teams’ leading scorer on a nightly basis. He is always their leading scorer and does his fair share of great passing. The Spurs also are second in the standings in the Western Conference which everyone excepts but it’s still very impressive. Then there is Lebron James who seems actually to be the most valuable player every year.
Then there is LeBron James who seems actually to be the most valuable player every year. LeBron has put up one of the best years of his career this year. LeBron has set career highs in field goal percentage (54.8), rebounds (8.6), and assists (8.7) all in his fourteenth season. No player has ever set career highs in one of these categories in their fourteenth season. However, the Cavs have had their fair share of struggles this season and Lebron has been the problem according to some people in the media which I don’t agree with.
With only a few games left for each team, the question now remains who is the MVP? I think it’s very hard to say Westbrook isn’t the MVP because of the numbers he put up. He is having arguably one of the best seasons in NBA history. But I will admit there are some games where Westbrook seems to be padding his stats. The fact still remains that he is averaging a triple double and if the Thunder didn’t have him they would most likely be a lottery team. I find what Harden is doing is almost as impressive because he changed positions. I don’t think people know how hard that actually is. I do believe that if the Rockets didn’t have Harden they would still be in the playoffs. They wouldn’t be in as a three seed maybe as seven or eight but still.
Kawhi Leonard is having a great year but I personally just think this season isn’t his year to win MVP just because of the other candidates he is going against. I do think he will win MVP one year. Lebron James is no question the most valuable player every year. In fact, the Cavs have yet to win a game this season when he has not played. But it just seems people just except it from him year in and year out and he is taken for granted.
In the NBA they never give the player who is actually the most valuable player because if that was the case Lebron James would win MVP every year. But that isn’t that way the NBA works sadly. I think Westbrook should win MVP the way it works because his numbers are insane and I wasn’t excepting the Thunder to be this good. Even though I think Westbrook should win MVP I don’t think that will be the way it ends. I think at the end of the day we will have our first co MVP’s and Harden and Westbrook will both win. I could be wrong but that is the way I see it playing out.
