Let me preface this by saying Mark Cuban is one of my favorite people ever. Cuban has been a guy that always has worn his emotions on his sleeve showing passion for his team while just letting it rip. But sometimes he lets it rip a little too much. That was the case Sunday appearing on Julius Erving’s Podcast “House Call with Dr. J” Cuban said the following…
“I’m probably not supposed to say this, but, like, I just had dinner with a bunch of our guys the other night, and here we are, you know, we weren’t competing for the playoffs, I was like, ‘Look, losing is our best option.'”
To no one’s surprise, Cuban was obviously fined for this statement. This time it was a whopping $600k for those comments which were clearly considered tanking. Cuban is no stranger to speaking his mind clearly as this put him up to $2.6 million in fines since he purchased the Mavericks in January of 2000.
All I have to say is – MARK, what are you doing my man! Obviously this doesn’t affect him too much as he’s a billionaire but I would assume he’d rather have that money then not no? That’s like pocket change for him but I don’t know about you but I don’t ever just throw my change and singles away. You keep that shit in your pocket, wallet, or car. So to should Mark Cuban keep his hundreds of thousands. Here’s the thing; he know’s he’s going to get fined for this and quite frankly he just doesn’t give a fuck. So there’s a part of me that is like ‘wow look at this dude just no fucks’. But the part of me that has any brain cells says keep your fucking mouth shut and keep your money to boot.
For the record let this be clear; he’s %10000 right. Cuban’s Mavericks have the third-worst record in the NBA and are in no position to win now as he alluded to. They could easily finish with the worst record in the NBA as well as they are just .5 games behind the Suns and Hawks for that title. My mans is right, they want to lose and lose frequently. Of course, the NBA has a draft lottery to you know try to prevent this type of tanking in which you aren’t guaranteed the #1 pick with the worst record. But regardless you want to put yourself in the best position to get that number one pick and set your franchise up with a cornerstone player for years to come.
The Mavericks may have gotten that last year as they had Dennis Smith fall into their laps to them with the ninth pick. Knick fans know this too well as the good ol’ genius Phil Jackson took Frank Ntilikina with the eighth pick. The Mavs also have Harrison Barnes who is a good young wing, but not a ton of young talent. Let me just reiterate they NEED to lose and get a Michael Porter or Marvin Bagley type talent in this draft. The worst position to be in, in today’s NBA is the middle. Not good enough to compete for a championship and not bad enough to get a top draft pick.
So Cuban my friend you are spot on, the Mavericks should tank all the way to that worst record, if possible. Just don’t say it out loud! I get it though, we all slip up sometimes and you know ‘think out loud.’ You know when ya girl asks you the number of girls you slept with and you say ‘uhh 34’ meanwhile you know you done fucked up and the right answer was 5. That’s what Cuban did, he thought out loud, and he done fucked up, but we all been there.
