The Dallas Mavericks plan on honoring former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo by signing him to a one-day deal, according to ESPN’s Marc Stein.
The Mavericks expect to have Romo in uniform and on the bench for the team’s regular-season home finale against the Denver Nuggets. He is not expected to play in the game.

Mark Cuban doing Mark Cuban things. Love every second of it. Not because I think it’s that cool or that great of an idea. Not even really sure I understand it. I love it because Mark Cuban doesn’t give a fuck what people think. This isn’t some like formality pre-game presentation where he gets to take the ceremonial first shot or something. He’s full on suiting up and will be an actual under contract player.
Bending and breaking rules and norms whenever he feels like it. Cuban owns a pro sports team the way every die hard dude sports fan dreams of. In my opinion, he’s the best owner in the league. Why? He prioritizes what should be the two top priorities for every owner, the players and the fans.
Who else would have blown the door open by literally signing a professional football player to play basketball? Wait, I just realized something? Is Tony Romo going to be the first football player to sign a professional basketball contract? I know it’s kind of gone the other way with college basketball players into football players, with Antonio Gates, Tony Gonzalez, Julius Peppers and Jimmy Grahm.
Even though it’s just an honorable formality and won’t ever touch the floor outside of warmups, he might be the only one ever. It’s a win-win for Cuban in a lost season. Honor a local legend and say goodbye in a unique way. The game is meaningless in the grand scheme of the season, it will put their name in the papers and some asses in the seats.
The real boss move would be to throw Romo in at some point. See what he’s still got. Who knows, maybe he drops a couple three and picks himself up a training camp invite next summer.
Now that we got the juices flowing, I think another NBA owner should do this. Looking at you rat-faced James Dolan. Not doing so well with the public opinion these days. New Yorkers hate you. You know who New Yorkers don’t hate Derek Jeter. Invite Derek Jeter to play in the Knicks last game. Then Knicks fans will finally be able to see what a winner looks like playing in a James Dolan controlled Madison Square Garden.
HA! In your dreams Dolan. Derek Jeter is as true a New Yorker as they come at this point. He is the god of this city. He is the Biracial Angel Every New Yorker knows the only thing that you’re god of James, is that little Kazoo you play in your fake Jazz band.
